Here is a truth not often acknowledged - lofty ambitions plus glitzy world can take a toll on the innocent you! First - kudos to debutant director Sudipto Chattopadhya for dwelling into a subject as sensitive as exploitation of child artists at the hands of the glamorous profession of acting. But looks like the effort to portray 'real' in 'reel' has gone wasted, as the film is nothing less than a riot of confusion and bewilderment. 'Pankh' is a story about the National Award-winning child star, who grows up to become a psychologically ill young man. Reason - his ambitious mother forced him to impersonate as a girl to get roles during his early days.

A juxtaposition of sexes in the life of the protagonist Jerry played by newcomer Maradona Rebello, who was superstar Kusum during his early days. As he grew up, his lost sense of identity and sexuality took a toll on his normal life, thanks to the masquerade of the young days. However, his mother (Lilette Dubey) seems to be absolutely not bothered with the fact and forces him to give an audition, which turns out to be a disaster. The superfluous ambition of the mother to make her son a superstar rises from the long submerged desire to become the leading lady herself. She is, now, waiting to fulfill her dream at the cost of her son.

Add to all this, an imaginary and mysterious friend Nandini, played by Bipasha Basu, who is the only ray of hope in Jerry's forlorn and despondent life. Though the plot of the movie seems to be a well-thought of one, it's the screenplay and the direction which has not lived up to the mark. The entire movie has been shot in the murky and dark indoors of either the studio or the residence of Jerry, lending the movie a dull and sunken feel. The narration and dialogues do not provide the backbone to the movie. While the former drags, the latter sounds nothing more than absolute exaggerated and overstated.

Another drawback of the movie is the inclusion of too many sub-plots. We have everything here, right from the casting director to a writer spouting chaste Hindi, oedipal complex to a delusional actress. Now, coming to the performance, first-timer Maradona Rebello has decently pulled of the tricky role. While Lilette Dubey plays the role of an unaffectionate mother to conviction, Mahesh Manjrekar brings in lighter moments to this seemingly serious flick. As for Bips, all that we can say is that her ostentatious costumes, coupled with eccentric (scary if I may say so) eye make-up has been a pathetic and pitiable attempt. So, for all those who were waiting to see the 'real' turn to 'reel', its better to catch up on your fantasy world with the Pankh (wings) of dream, rather than watching Pankh!

After Priyanka Chopra, it is Bipasha Basu who would be donning different looks in the much awaited 'Pankh', but this time the count stops at nine. Scripted and directed by debutant Sudipto Chattopadhyaya, each look of this suave and sensuous actress is set to reflect the attitude and mood of the male lead, played by debutant Maradona Robello. The music has been given by Raju Singh to the lyrics penned down by director Sudipto Chattopadhyaya. Releasing on 2 April, 2010, 'Pankh' has been produced by Sanjay Gupta, under the banner of White Feather Films.

The story revolves around Baby Kusum who happens to be a boy, but plays female roles in films. Originally named Jerry, he is renamed Master Jai for the movies. On attaining maturity, Jerry (Maradona Robello) wants to be become a 'hero', but is pressurized by his poor parents, thus leaving him puzzled. Eventually, he ends up becoming a drug-abuser, spending all his time at home. Things get worse when he ends up falling in love with an imaginary actress, Nandini (Bipasha Basu). A fantasy woman, whom Jerry has conjured up in his head, taunts and fights with him. She prepares Jerry to face the camera as a young man, only to lead to another catastrophe.

Director Sudipto Chattopadhyaya has confidently highlighted the common practice of casting children in roles, contrary to their gender. Considered as Bollywood's wildest take on movies so far, the movie is sure to touch every sensitive soul. Will the concept of sexual identity be able to tear the veil of shame covering the face of the glamorous profession of acting? Will it be able to touch the right chords with the audience? Will Jerry be finally able to achieve his dreams of being launched as a 'hero'? Wait till 2 April 2010 for the movie to release to get these answers.
