Probably not if the game show host is anything like Chuck Barris who, in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, juggles his day job as a TV producer/presenter with being a hired killer for the CIA by night. Sam Rockwell, seen here in his first starring role (but definitely not his last), plays the part of Barris, who in 1984 confessed to his secret lifestyle in an "unauthorized" biography. After coming up with ideas such as "The Dating Game" and "The Gong Show" for TV network ABC, Barris was described by the US media as "the decline of modern civilization" – if you've ever watched "Blind Date" or "Pop Idol", you'll probably agree. He's a seedy and instantly dislikeable character who, when not repeatedly cheating on his far too understanding girlfriend (Drew Barrymore), seems to have little conscious problem in adjusting to his new double life as a hit man. Then again, considering he spent the first part of his childhood being brought up as a girl, and received advice from the likes of a Swiss Toni-esque Rutger Hauer telling him that "killing a man is much like making love to a beautiful woman", perhaps it's not all that surprising to find Barris a little screwed up. George Clooney appears as the CIA Agent dedicated to recruiting Barris to the cause but, far more notably, makes his directorial debut. His style is distinct if not discreet – there's a slight feeling that he's trying a bit too hard to draw attention to his work, and some parts of the film flow a little unnaturally. But Clooney certainly knows a few people in this business, and star cameos pop up almost constantly – from the afore-mentioned Hauer, to Julia Roberts as a double-crossing spy, and blink-and-you'll-miss-em appearances from Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.  |

Bisa jadi, The Runaways adalah band rock pertama yang semua anggotanya adalah cewek. Dari band ini pula lantas muncul dua nama besar yang sampai sekarang masih dianggap legenda musik rock, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) dan Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton). The Runaways sendiri pertama kali dibentuk di Los Angeles di penghujung tahun 1975. Cikal bakal all girls band ini adalah Joan Jett sang gitaris dan Sandy West (Stella Maeve), sang drummer yang punya impian besar menjadi rock star. Dengan bantuan Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), dua cikal bakal The Runaways ini pun bertemu dengan Lita Ford dan Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), dan Robin (Alia Shawkat ). Tak disangka-sangka, dalam waktu singkat popularitas The Runaways meningkat pesat dan dalam sekejap mata pula kelima remaja berusia belasan ini menjadi band pembuka, band-band besar seperti Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Ramones, dan bahkan Van Halen. Sayang di puncak kejayaan ini Cherry mulai kehilangan kendali dan memutuskan meninggalkan. R E V I E W [English] In spirit, the notion of casting a bunch of teen horror and "Twilight Saga" actresses as the real-life members of the short lived but integral punk band The Runaways makes perfect sense. Just as these people want to prove that there's more to them than the popular cage the world and the media has cast them in, so too did the members of The Runaways want to throw off the shackles of perception that girls cannot rock. Hence, Kristen Stewart (of "Twilight Saga" fame) plays Joan Jett, Scout Taylor-Compton (from Rob Zombie's "Halloween" films) plays Lita Ford, and a solidly teenaged Dakota Fanning (of numerous Dakota Fanning movies, and at least one "Twilight Saga" outing) is Cherie Currie. They swear, spit, take drugs, have sex, and wallow in the squalor that was the early age of the West Coast punk scene, circa 1975. And yes, they do indeed rock. But as far as rock n' roll biopics go, "The Runaways" is not the cherry bomb it sets out to be. Blame the lack of focus and uncertain direction. After primarily following Stewart's Jett for the early portion of the film, the focus of the story then shifts to Fanning's Currie, where it almost by accident settles for the remainder of the duration. Fittingly, the film's story is based upon Currie's book "Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story" - but not to be outdone, Joan Jett is credited as an executive producer. Director Floria Sigismondi maintains a consistent if flat atmosphere until the point in the story when the girls get signed to Mercury Records, and then things get sloppy, introducing intrusive graphics and occasional ineffectual symbolism. At one point, there is even a time-condensing headlines rise-to-fame montage, right out of "That Thing You Do!". "The Runaways" can and should evoke many things, but Tom Hanks movies should not be one of them. The film never becomes more symbolically poignant that it's opening shot of menstrual blood hitting the pavement - a confrontational metaphor for female coming of age in the gritty and hardened world of rock n' roll. But by this point in the seventies, rock had been through a whirlwind of protopunk aggression punctuated with a solid dose of androgyny. This is the rift that would result in the 1970s rock divide, resulting in the vapid disco scene on one extreme, and the aggressive punk rock movement on the other. The west coast point of view of the punk scene is the world of this film, although the androgyny of what immediately musically preceded The Runaways is also felt. This is seen most obviously by Currie's love of David Bowie's music, but also in the way the world relates to The Runaways, and how they relate to each other. Although the talented Kristen Stewart gets considerable screen time, Jett still comes off as an underdeveloped character. "The Runaways" is, seemingly by default, the Cherie Currie story, with the skilled Fanning's take on the under-aged singing sex bomb as the true focus. Currie is portrayed effectively as a girly girl at heart with a rebellious streak - something that is ceased upon for all it's worth by sleazy punk rock mover and shaker Kim Fowley, memorably played by Michael Shannon. The depiction of their collaborative inception of the band's signature song, "Cherry Bomb" - never a runaway pop culture hit in and of itself - is treated with the kind of dualistic matter-of-fact reverence that we see when Reese Witherspoon writes "Ring of Fire" in "Walk the Line". Currie's inability to say no to anyone or anything contributes generously to both the success and demise of the band. Unfortunately director Sigismondi is also unable to say no to any idea, and can never wrestle the meandering story into a cohesive but grungy box. She clearly can't decide whether to directorially embrace the apathetic spirit of punk, or actually be a filmmaker. In the end, "The Runaways" is a notable effort but too much of a mess - and not in a good way. That is to say, it's not the kind of punk rock mess that is wants to be.  |

R E V I E W [English] The Wall Street/Upper East Side axis traveled by today's (really last year's) bright young things provides the playing field for writer-director Julio DePietro's impressive debut, "The Good Guy." Suggesting "Metropolitan" meets "Boiler Room," the film has attractive "Metropolitan"-like upwardly mobile urbanites but without the "Boiler Room" cynicism and energy that gave that film its originality and edge. But maybe a nostalgic whiff of recent financial high times is a good thing, even if not quite the hedge needed against what looms as a long-shot theatrical bet. DePietro, who worked in investment, wisely writes about what he knows. The film kicks off in flashback as disheveled hero Tommy (Scott Porter), escaping from a nocturnal downpour and a bad situation, begs for help in the doorway of estranged girlfriend Beth (Alexis Bledel). But she's otherwise engaged with an unidentified other and turns pathetic Tommy away. Jump to months earlier as Tommy and Beth are beginning a serious relationship. She's an art curator on the verge of an interesting job switch at a time when jobs easily changed. Tommy's a Wall Street comer. He shines on a frenetic trade floor as a hotshot bank investment sales guy capable of pitting hedge fund and mutual fund managers against one another for shares in his clients' companies. Tommy worships at the feet of Cash (Andrew McCarthy), his all-knowing, wiseass boss who is a master of the game. When Cash learns that a co-worker is jumping to another job, he orders Tommy to quickly find a replacement. His unlikely choice is Daniel (Bryan Greenberg), the soft-spoken computer whiz kid of the sales floor. Cash has doubts, but Tommy assures he'll break him in. Tommy manages to turn his creation into a salesman who can look and play the part. In an unbelievably coincidental meet-cute in a bookstore line, Daniel also begins a friendship with Beth that goes where we expect as Tommy lets his partying and womanizing get the better of him. The film is helped by supporting players including Colin Egglesfield and Anna Chlumsky as smart, upwardly mobile pals caught up in a culture awash in money, sex, greed and a need to succeed. Like its characters, "Good Guy" is sharp, fun and pleasant to behold, and its recreational, apartment and workplace locales are appropriately slick and showy. The film's most curious flaw is the depiction of Daniel early on as a shy geek who goes all wussy when talking to girls. Hey, the guy is a hunky ex-Marine who went to Princeton. Such vulnerability should have been his diabolical ruse, not a personality trait. Conceived and filmed before the economic mess, "Good Guy," which might be filed under romantic drama/historical, does pose one provocative question: How much of its carefree, free-spending world still exists today?  |
